Daniel Dhers is Winning Every Damn Thing
By Colin Bane
You might not be surprised to read that Daniel Dhers qualified first in the BMX Street Prelims here in Dallas, putting him in his favorite position as he heads into Saturday's Finals event at the LG Action Sports Championships.
The young Venezuelan rider has been winning just about everything lately: He won X Games 13. He won the 2007 Dew Cup after Dew Tour wins in Baltimore, Cleveland, and Orlando. Just the other day, he finally got around to depositing over $110,000 in prize checks he had stashed in his pocket over the last few months. In other words: He's having one hell of a year. Posting a score of 88.00 in Friday's LG Prelims shows he's ready to go out with a bang.
Here's who's out to stop him: Garrett Reynolds. Morgan Wade. Dennis Enarson. Scotty Cranmer. Diogo Canina. Mark Webb. Alistair Whitton. Marcus Tooker. Kevin Kiraly. Less than five points separated the top 10 riders in Prelims, a cut made even more contentious by a three-way tie for the bubble position between Kiraly, Josh Harrington, and Steven McCann before Kiraly's higher backup run settled the score.
Dhers is going to be hard to chase down: He basically does something ridiculous on every wall he hits, casually tossing out so many flair and tailwhip variations it's hard to keep a decent account of it without succumbing to dizziness: Flatspin 720, invert flair, alley-oop flair... Dhers is spinning his way to BMX royalty this year, looking to add an LG Action Sports World Championship (he won in 2006) jewel to his crown and add a $30,000 check to his treasure pile.
